We all know that feeling, scratchy throat, blocked nose, heavy head. One of the main reasons and number 1 concern that many people still go to the doctors and have time off work for is the very infectious common cold or Flu. Unfortunately conventional medicine has little to offer for relief or treatment because the common cold is caused by a virus, not bacteria. This also means that antibiotics DO NOT work either as they only work on bacterial infections.

Generally a cold will normally last around 6- 8 days or so, however some can last for weeks or go and then return within days! I personally believe that how quickly you recover has a lot to do with your general lifestyle and strength of your immune system.

At this time of year, it is hard to ignore the hundreds of adverts and signs in shops recommending you try the new and improved formula of many over the counter remedies, claiming for a ‘speedier recovery’. This in most cases is not entirely accurate as many of them often work against your body’s natural defence system and healing mechanisms!

Natural remedies can help reduce your worst symptoms – which is all that over the counter medication will do just without all of the potentially dangerous side affects to your body! Here are our top 5 that we use regularly all year round that are affordable and easily accessible!

1. Honey /Lemon
2. Apple Cider Vinegar
3. Garlic
4. Organic Chicken stock / Bone Broth
5. Essential Oils – Eucalyptus, Thieves, Cloves, Lavender, Tea Tree etc

The Benefits of each

1. Honey – is a natural antibiotic and very good for soothing a sore throat. Its warm coating heals soothe a sore throat. A teaspoon on its own, or added in a raw juice/ smoothie /tea or my personal favourite, in warm water & lemon (lemon being another ancient medicinal remedy and full of Vit C)
2. Apple Cider Vinegar – It creates an environment in the gut that thrush and parasites dislike. With its anti fungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties it is a great natural immune boostert For colds and flu’s add a tablespoon (or two) to a glass of water as a very effective throat gargle – gargle every hour at the first sign of a sore throat
3. Garlic – Is an amazing natural antibiotic rich in antioxidants and selenium. It is antibacterial and antiviral so helpful at fighting off infections. Most beneficial when eaten raw, you can add it to salads, soups or simply crush it into water and drink !
4. Organic Chicken Stock – organically prepared of course this is a staple in my fridge/freezer! One of man’s oldest home made remedies. Not only for healing the gut wall and aiding digestion but to boost your immune system and fight off illness.
5. Essential Oils – there are many essential oil you can use to fight off colds & flu but we are starting with Eucalyptus.
Eucalyptus is great to use for congestion and mucus build up. Combine a few drops with water and apply to a cloth to smell. Alternatively place the cloth over the congested area.
Put approx 10 drops into hot water and carefully place your head over the bowl with a towel over your head to keep the steam in. Breath in the steam to ease congestion.
Add a few drops to a carrier oil (like coconut) to use as a chest, back OR foot rub. Use a glass jar to keep your oil/ rub in. Start by melting coconut oil on a very low heat, once melted take off the heat and add a few drops of essential oil ** (eucalyptus, cloves and thieves are good) Then pour into your jar to keep.

** Check the details of the essential oil you use – some vary in strength as to how much you will need to add. Also always check recommended amount if you are making a chest rub for children.
