This is one of my favorite things to do that we always have a supply of in the freezer. It is a great way of adding extra nutrients to your little one’s diet and so simple to make!

Immune Boosting Gummies made with Gelatin and Freshly squeezed oranges for that extra Vitamin C. When looking for ways to increase goodness into mine and my daughter’s diet I discovered and read a lot of information from the Weston A Price Foundation. I didn’t realize how beneficial some of the older food traditions were to our health and how simple recipes could massively improve our immune systems, digestive systems and so on.

One of the ingredients i came across a lot was Gelatin, something i had never really thought about before. I read how its benefits on the body were endless …. it helps to improve digestion and gut health, improves the elasticity of the skin, aids in joint mobility and repair of ligaments and is even shown to improve sleep quality and moods. This was soon to become one of my store cupboard essentials! So where can you find gelatin?

Gelatin is a protein made from animal products and is made by boiling the bones, skin, and cartilage of animals to extract the natural collagen.

Collagen is a protein in connective tissue, skin, and bones. Collagen makes up to 25-35% of our whole bodies protein content – we have more collagen in our bodies than any other type of protein

So, as you already know by now, we eat a lot of bone broth ( see recipe here Chicken Stock ) and organic animal fat in our diet, so i was happy that was one way we were getting added goodness into our diet BUT it’s not always easy to feed toddlers bone broth lets be honest !! This is how i discovered ‘gummy bears’ …….. i am not talking your average shop bought gummy bears and here is why:

Generally, they are filled with lots of sugar, E numbers and made with commercially farmed animal products (ie not organic and can be full of hormones etc) which negates what i am trying to do hear – build a healthy body! So not something i really want to include in our everyday diet …………

However, you can buy good quality gelatin in powder form, this can be added to hot drinks/stews/ soups and made into jelly !!! PERFECT …. so that is what i did …….

What you will need :

  • 3-4 tablespoons Good quality gelatin powder
  •  4-5 Organic Oranges
  • Gummy bear Moulds

What to do:

This recipe will make approx 45 jelly sweets

  1. Squeeze the juice of 4 -5 large organic oranges and pour into a saucepan on a low heat (do not let it boil)
  2. Once the juice is warm/hot start to very gradually add your gelatin stirring continuously – try not to add too much at a time as this will turn lumpy.
  3. It will start to get a little thicker and look like a syrup consistency
  4.  Once it looks like this you can then pour it into your jelly molds and add to the fridge to set.

TIP I usually store them in the freezer as after approx 5 days they will start to go off, so i keep a small jar in the fridge with a few in for the week and then just top the jar up from the freezer when i need them

Start with 1 gummy a day and then work up to 2 or 3  – keep in mind they are a gut soother so if you find your stools become a little loose then reduce again to 1 a day until you get used to them. They are great for adults as well as little ones and something we  eat daily …….  i hope you enjoy them! x
