How to make your own nut milk

There are so many ‘milk alternatives’ in the shops nowadays – its hard to know which one to choose. Most of them also have added ingredients like sugar and E numbers which we generally want to avoid – so here is a simple way to make your own ……

Milks we like to make:

Almond Milk

Cashew Milk

Oat Milk

Coconut Milk

Method

First, soak your nut of choice in a bowl of filtered water overnight (at least 6-8 hours)

Why do I need to pre soak my nuts you may ask?

Nuts, grains & seeds contain nutritional inhibitors and toxic substances, to the body these are enzyme inhibitors, phytates (phytic acid) and by soaking them many of the substances are eliminated. Enzyme inhibitors can disrupt the digestion and absorption of minerals so by pre soaking them it removes the phytates allowing your body to digest them far easier.

Discard the water and add your soaked nuts to a blender with about a cup full of fresh filtered water.

Blend nuts in the blender adding water as you go to get a nice milky consistency

Tip: We also add a teaspoon of cinnamon at this point to give it a nice little kick

Once you are happy with the consistency you will need :

1 bowl

1 muslin

Place the muslin over the bowl and slowly pour the contents of the blender onto the muslin , the pulp will be caught in the muslin and the milk should drip through into the bowl. Squeeze any excess and put the pulp to one side (we can show you how to use this for homemade muesli or ground to make almond flour next time so you don’t need to throw it away or waste it)

There you have it a bowl of almond milk !! Transfer it into a milk bottle and keep it in the fridge – it should last for 4-5 days but will separate so give it a good shake before you use it. Its great in smoothies or porridge, in baking, in coffee or even on its own !
