Smoothies are one of my favourite things to make in the morning if I am in a hurry and I want a glass full of goodness – you can pack them full of anything and everything, there isn’t much washing up (hoorah) and you can have it on the go as you are rushing off to your next swimming/football or play group ! My partner made me the mother of all smoothies when I went into labour and it was literally the best thing he did – poor thing wasn’t really sure what to do with himself but he is pretty good when it comes to food. He knew I would need lots of energy and a reserve of Fats so he packed it full of everything – coconut oil, peanut butter, fruit, coconut cream, spinach …. you name it, it was in there! And because I didn’t really fancy eating anything throughout labour being able to drink it through a straw was amazing !

Tip: Try to make more than you need. Grab yourself some lolly – pop moulds and pour the leftovers in …. pop them into the freezer and you have got healthy ice creams for you or the kids on a sunny day or if you fancy a little something sweet ! Full of goodness with no nasties in and you don’t have to feel bad about eating ice cream for breakfast !! win win.

So, when making a smoothie you first need a base – something that will help to bind it and make it thick and creamy. Good options would be ….

Banana

Avocado

Mango

Then you need your flavours …. These can be fresh or frozen

Strawberries

Raspberries

Blueberries

Blackberries

Cherries

Pineapple

A liquid ……..

Water

Coconut Milk

Coconut Water

Coconut Cream

Almond Milk

Nut Milk

Oat Milk

To give it something a little extra …..

Raw Cacao – adds a chocolatey flavour

Chia Seeds – Are great at absorbing liquid and thickening

Nut Butter

Acai Powder

Spirulina

Hemp Protein Powder

Chlorella

Maca Powder

Additional …..

Cream

Yoghurt

Ice Cubes

To sweeten …..

Honey

Maple Syrup

Dates

Greens ,,,,,,,

Spinach

Place all of your ingredients into a blender and mix – add the milk / water to the consistency you like. It is important to try to keep a balance of fats/carbs & proteins so that it is not just sugar being absorbed – that way it will keep you energized and fuller for longer.

Enjoy x
